During the thirties of the last century in western, italian part of the town Rijeka – Fiume, there was a puppeteer ansambl, and the program was held in italian. In eastern part of the town, called Sušak, in puppet theatre, croatian language was used occasionally. 1960. puppet theatre “Domino” was founded as one of the five professional puppet theatres in Croatia. During the eighties of the last century there were a lot of collaborations with Zagreb and Ljubljana. Nineties are marked with successful collaborations with directors like Zvonko Festini, Edi Majaron, Radovan Maričić, Luko Paljetak, Zoran Mužić, Lawrence Kiiru, Milena Dundov, and guest directors from Poland and Italy.
In 1993. was renamed into Rijeka Puppet Theatre
Since 1996., Rijeka City Puppet Theatre is placed in renewed building with 180 seats with everyday shows from national and international literature for preschool and school children.
Rijeka CPT is the organizer of the International Puppet Theater Festival which is held every year in November, and is also a member of the International Association of Theater for Children and Youth ASSITEJ.
Since 1993 Rijeka City Puppet Theatre received 68 awards, collective and individual awards for employees and associates of the Theater.
Theater participates annually in major Croatian puppetry festivals and meetings at home and abroad.
