ContaKids is a method that uses physical contact through movement and play to deepen communication between the child and the parent.
Its benefits are multiple: the child develops motor skills and trust in oneself, while the parent develops trust in their child and his/her skills while learning about one’s own body. We devise the space and opportunity for an exchange of roles – allowing adults to recall what it means to be a child, even if only for a moment, allowing the parent a respite to pay attention to oneself and one’s body body. And, most importantly, the child and parent are in the process of learning together and on equal terms!
The ContaKids workshop begins with a short warm-up for the parent while the child is free to do play as they wish. After a short preparation we warm-up together – parents and children – with simple dynamic exercises and spatial tasks. The rest of the workshop teaches different elements which raise awareness of the body’s weight, balance. We learn how to support and lift a child in various ways based on contact improvisation methodology.
The exercises encourage coordination and orientation in space, develop confidence, encourage and develop awareness of one’s own body, but also the other bodies present in the space, strengthen communion and group interconnection. The concept of a one hour workshop is consistent and as we cycle through the excercizes the tasks are developed further and the learned elements combined to allow the development of shorter motion sequences, thereby enhancing and stimulating the development of physical memory.
The method is designed for children 2-5 years old.
